On December 2nd, WaterAid initiated the annual #GivingTuesday campaign and it was their biggest challenge yet. The concept of the challenge is to give back. It doesn’t have to be a money donation. It could be giving time, a tweet or a shout out. The challenge is all about changing peoples lives in a simple, yet substantial way.
Let’s take a step back and talk about what WaterAid does and how their efforts help change so many peoples lives and what they are primarily focused on.
WaterAid was established in 1981 in response to the launch of the UN 1981-1991 Decade of Drinking Water and Sanitation. For more than 30 years WaterAid has been transforming many lives by improving access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene in the world’s poorest communities. The non-profit organization provide access to safe water and sanitation to the world’s poorest people. Knowing that water and sanitation are basic human rights, together with improved hygiene, they make a huge difference in health and education aspects of society. Therefore this is the first step in overcoming poverty.
In order to develop strategic projects. WaterAid invests in local partners to enable them to deliver the water, sanitation and hygiene programs. Providing financial support, training and technical advice as well as help with planning, budgeting and institutional development. Local partners are essential when it comes to understanding local issues and to sustain projects that meet the communities real needs. It’s not enough just to ensure communities have taps and toilets. In order for communities to receive the ultimate benefit of the programs, they have to improve hygiene and understand how to use the tools they were given.
Did you know about #GivingTuesday? If not this cool video shows exactly what the campaign is about. We truly support WaterAid’s mission and were able to donate and give (many) shout outs during the campaign. We are looking forward to spreading the word and ensuring another great year in 2015.
